"I think that it’s just really unfortunate because after all these years that our people spent fighting for our rights, we have been given a false sense of ‘it’s okay’ and ‘we have freedom.’ I think that these instances have really brought to light what’s really going on in the minds of every race, but especially blacks and whites. I think social media has given a strong light to what’s really going on because the thing about it is, it never really ended. It’s always kind of been here. Racial prejudice, police brutality on black people - it’s been here for a while; and I think that now that we have social media, it’s now becoming a light and it’s harder to ignore. I really wish that people would see in their hearts to do away with the racial prejudice, but it’s so hard because a lot of it is inbred in us."

"It makes me so upset. You’d think because we have a black president now, things would be different; but it just shows you how far we’ve come, but we take years back. Our president is black, but yet young boys are being killed for nothing; so it makes me question just the whole system. Something’s gotta change; and I just hope that we don’t forget about this because we tend to forget and go back to our lives, but I hope we actually make a change instead of just doing rallies. Actually make a movement."

"It makes me scared to have children. It’s almost like we were born into a world where we don’t have a choice in what our destiny is. Whatever society says, that’s what it is. We are fortunate to be in an institution where we can try to overcome what society says we’re destined to be, but for people who never got the opportunity, like Mike Brown … we need to do better as a nation."

"I’ve noticed with Trayvon Martin and now with Mike Brown that it takes death for there to be positive uprise. Why can’t there be a year-round movement?"
